Differential mortality by lifetime earnings in Germany

چکیده
We estimate mortality rates by a measure of socio-economic status in a very large sample of male German pensioners aged 65 or older. Our analysis is entirely nonparametric. Furthermore, the data enable us to compare mortality experiences in eastern and western Germany conditional on socio-economic status. As a simple summary measure, we compute period life expectancies at age 65. Our findings show a lower bound of almost 50 percent (six years) on the difference in life expectancy between the lowest and the highest socio-economic group considered. Within groups, we find similar values for the former GDR and western Germany. Our analysis contributes to the literature in three aspects. First, we provide the first population-based differential mortality study for Germany. Second, we use a novel measure of lifetime earnings as a proxy for socio-economic status that remains applicable to retired people. Third, the comparison between eastern and western Germany may provide some interesting insights for transformation countries. 1Free University Amsterdam, Department of Economics, De Boelelaan 1105, 1081 HV Amsterdam, The Netherlands, E-mail: [email protected] 2Rostocker Zentrum zur Erforschung des Demografischen Wandels, Germany. Increasing Differential Mortality by Lifetime Earnings in the United States
Despite widespread interest in differential mortality, little is known about how these differentials, for the nonretired population, have evolved in the last twenty years. This study aims to fill this gap by providing estimates of trends in differential mortality by measures of lifetime earnings in the 1983 to 2003 period. A unique data set constructed matching data from the Survey of Income an...
متن کاملThe Empirical Relationship between Lifetime Earnings and Mortality
Researchers have estimated differential mortality across socioeconomic groups by classifying individuals using income in the previous year. The first problem with this strategy is reverse causation. Second, annual income is a noisy measure of permanent income. This paper tackles these two drawbacks by using better measures of lifetime earnings from administrative records to classify individuals...
متن کاملRising mortality and life expectancy differentials by lifetime earnings in the United States.
Are mortality and life expectancy differences by socioeconomic groups increasing in the United States? Using a unique data set matching administrative and survey data, this study explores trends in these differentials by lifetime earnings for the 1983-2003 period. Results indicate a consistent increase in mortality differentials across sex and age groups. The study also finds a substantial incr...

The distributional effects of some proposed Social Security law changes (for example, an increase in Social Security’s early entitlement age (EEA)) are at least partially dependent on the distribution of health and mortality risk throughout the fully insured Social Security–covered worker population. To evaluate these types of proposals, retirement policy analysts typically tabulate the percent...
متن کاملComparing Earnings Management in Germany and the USA
This study presents empirical evidence concerning the effect of different accounting standard on earnings management. Prior studies have shown that accounting standards influence earnings management. Tighter accounting standards regime restricts management’s descretion to manipulate accruals, and at the same time, induce more costly real earnings management activities. To investigate this iss...
